The idea of filling in a lexicon of psychopathology for the clinician was born from different considerations.
The first is that among the Italian psychiatrists, and not only Italians, the desire to know better or to rediscover psychopathology has been making its way for some time.
A desire that often expresses, in addition to the desire for cultural enrichment, the need to reaffirm its professionalism, emancipating itself from an increasingly flat and demotivating daily practice, in which the professional vocabulary has reduced to a dozen words.
The second observation is that this desire for psychopathology finds few answers today.
On the one hand there are classic treaties, often difficult to find, inevitably weighted by the dust left by time and without some chapters today of great interest for the clinician. On the other there are recent works, almost always in English, generally sophisticated and difficult to read and published in almost unobtainable magazines (because the major magazines, the most read, rarely contain psychopathology works).
There is no treatise or a modern manual of psychopathology in Italian that proposes classic concepts and summarizes the new acquisitions and, even if this treatise or manual existed, the clinician probably would not have time to read it.
The third consideration is that today there are various guidelines and different schools in psychopathology, which offer different models. A treatise or a psychopathology manual would run the risk of being unilateral or too heterogeneous.
The problem of interogeneity is less relevant for a lexicon, which is not necessarily asked to provide a coherent overall vision.
The fourth observation is that the Italian psychopathological tradition is very rich, and also varied, but that this wealth is often unknown to the clinician.
Moreover, it is a wealth widely attributable to generations of scholars who have left or are about to leave clinical practice.
Making this tradition known to young psychiatrists is essential, before it is too late and that a gap is created that it will no longer be possible to fill.
The fifth consideration is that our current diagnostic systems are as detailed and meticulous in delineating the syndromes as they are superficial and elusive in describing the symptoms and psychopathological signs.
Just read the glosary contained in some pages at the end of the DSM-IV to realize it.
The few words dedicated to symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations appear non -exhaustive or even confusing.
Here are the reasons behind the idea of producing this lexicon, whose voices have been entrusted to several Italian psychiatrists and psychologists, as well as some foreign experts who have provided fundamental contributions and are able to clearly export them to the clinician.
